The Act helps to speed up the planning system, holds developers to account, cuts bureaucracy, encourages councils to build new homes in the right places, and creates new powers to regenerate town centres.
It also factors in the need for appropriate infrastructure to support new homes such as GP surgeries, schools, and transport links. It also gives local people a stronger voice on planning and puts the environment at the heart of the decision-making process, creating neighbourhoods where people want to live and work.
Commenting, Leo said: "I am delighted to see that the Government’s ambitious Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill, which I voted in favour for, has been passed and become an Act of Parliament.
"This Act will give local councils the powers they need to build more homes in the right places, as well as introducing new laws that will help to transform town centres and high streets."
