In 1991, Ukraine declared independence from the former USSR, with 92% of the country voting in favour in a national referendum.
Today, Ukraine's existence as a sovereign nation is under threat following from Putin's illegal invasion 18 months ago.
Ukraine’s declaration of independence referenced its right to self-determination in accordance with the UN Charter and declared that its territory was indivisible and inviolable. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine challenges these principles.
The UK will continue to provide Ukraine with humanitarian, economic and military aid until Russia’s forces leave. This is the quickest path to peace.
Commenting, Leo Docherty MP, Minister of State for Europe, said:
"On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Ukrainians’ unity and our commitment to support them have never been stronger. We are inspired by the bravery and spirit of the Ukrainian people, and we will support them until they win this war.
"Slava Ukraini! Слава Україні!"
